Our friend Devora Liss decided to brave the Euro and came to visit us in Bonn yesterday. She was on her way back to Israel after a two week trip in the US. At her request, I am obliged to mention that she is our first visitor. To really giver her a feel for Germany, we decided to head over to our local supermarket which carries all kinds of goodies. After wandering in amazement through the three aisles devoted to chocolate, we headed to the meat section. Germans love their Wurst (be it pork, beef, or blood). But what we really wanted to point out was the bizarre array of lunch meats that you can procured. If you look carefully at the picture at right, you will see Devora in the foreground with all the different types of meat in a case behind her. In the third row away from Devora, you can see a piece of meat with a smiley face. We're not sure how the manufacturer achieves this design and I don't think that we want to find out. Further to the right you will see other meats which we believe to be different types of pork, beef, chicken, and turkey suspended in a gelatinous substance. This is equally disgusting.
